7 Best Beaches in Jeju Island Worth Visiting

Every time I visit Jeju Island, I make time for its beaches.

The beaches are clean, peaceful, and framed by some of the island’s best scenery, including olle trails and easy walking paths.

The beaches in Jeju Island are especially beautiful at sunset, so I always try to plan visits around 5pm.

Here are 7 of the best beaches in Jeju Island to visit, including my favorites that I frequented.

Map β€” Where to Find the Best Beaches in Jeju

The beaches in Jeju Island are mostly scattered along the northern coast.

🚌 I traveled to all of these beaches in Jeju without a car. They’re all accessible by bus, though a few beaches may require a 10-minute walk through scenic paths.

🎬 Many of these beaches were also kdrama filming locations in Jeju.

1. Gwakji Beach

Address: Gwakji-ri, Aewol-eup, Jeju-si, Jeju-do

Highlights: Calm waters, next to Hamdok trail and the popular Aewol Cafe Street.

A serene view of Gwakji Beach on Jeju Island, South Korea, taken from a slight elevation. The sandy shoreline is scattered with seaweed and small rocks, with gentle waves lapping at the edge. In the distance, a few people walk along the beach near the water, while low buildings and dark rocky outcrops are visible further along the coast under a cloudy sky.

Gwakji Beach is a family-friendly beach in Jeju Island located in the north-western side of the island.

The water is swimmable but limited to the shallow part. The sand is white and more coarse. It’s a perfect beach to relax on the sand and watch the sunset.

Rocky shoreline with large volcanic rocks, paved walking path, and two people walking along the coast under a cloudy sky.

What makes Gwakji Beach one of my favorite beaches in Jeju Island is not really the beach itself but the trail going to Gwakji Beach, called the Handam Coastal Walk.

Handam Coastal Walk is a gorgeous coastal path lined with black lava rocks, greenery, and views of the ocean. It is also right next to the popular Aewol Cafe street.

2. Hyeopjae Beach

Address: 329-10 Hallim-ro, Hallim-eup, Jeju-si, Jeju-do

Highlights: Swimmable, clusters of black lava rocks, can get crowded

Hyeopjae Beach is located in the northwestern side of Jeju Island.

The beach is known for its white sand, black lava rocks, and clear waters that’s safe for swimming.

People at a beach during sunset with orange umbrellas, some swimming and relaxing on the sand, and others walking along the shore.

Though, it is often packed with visitors during the warmer months so it can get crowded.

You can also sit on the black lava rocks formed by volcanic eruptions, which is a highlight of Hyeopjae Beach and a popular photo op.

Geumneung Beach is right next to and within walking distance from Hyeopjae Beach. On the way there you’ll see a campground too.

The water at Geumneung Beach is quite shallow but the water is pristine, beautiful and perfect for kayaking.

There’s a cement outlook area right next to the convenience store that you can sit on to just enjoy the view.

Across the road from Geumneung Beach are Hallim Park, Hyeopjae Cave, and Ssangyong Cave that you can visit while there.

Right across the beach are bus stops to keep going south or back to Jeju City.

4. Woljeongri Beach

Address: Woljeong-ri, Gujwa-eup, Jeju-si, Jeju-do

Highlights: Beach town, windmills, cafes.

A sunny day at Woljeong Beach on Jeju Island, South Korea, with white sand and clear blue water. The beach is dotted with people enjoying the water, some swimming and others standing on the rocky outcrops. In the background, several large wind turbines are visible near the shoreline, along with low buildings. The sky is bright blue with a few scattered clouds, emphasizing the clean and open environment. A signpost with a phone number is visible in the foreground on the right.

Located on the northeast of Jeju Island is Woljeongri Beach, located in a beach town area that’s surround by windmills.

Woljeongri beach has clear blue waters and is along a coastline of cafes, restaurants and galleries.

This Jeju beach is around a 10-15 minute walk away from the nearest bus stop.

The walk is in a non-commercial area that feels like a countryside, but the view is beautiful with a clear walking path.

5. Hamdeok Beach

Address: Sinbuk-ro, Jocheon-eup, Jeju-si, Jeju-do

Highlights: Sunset views, teal water, walking trails.

Crowded shallow beach 0 Hamdeok Beach Jeju Island

Hamdeok Beach may be my favorite beach in Jeju Island, not really for the beach but for the whole surrounding area. It’s located in the northeastern part of Jeju.

There are two main beaches in the area.

The first one is crowded, but if you keep walking past the first one, there is a smaller and more secluded beach to just sit on the sand and watch the waters.

I came here a few times to watch the sunset.

Beachfront with city buildings and mountains in the background, view from a grassy cliff with a rope fence.
Rocky shoreline with dark volcanic rocks and calm ocean water under a cloudy sky at sunset.

If you keep walking up the hill past the beach areas, there’s a beautiful viewpoint of Hamdeok Beach where you can see the teal waters from above.

There are also olle trails you can walk throughout the area.

There’s one walking bridge that leads you to clusters of large black lava rocks that you can sit on and enjoy the view and sunset (photo on the right).

6. Jungmun Saekdal Beach

Address: Saekdal-dong, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do

Highlights: Best Jeju beach for surfing, locals bars, cliff viewpoints, walkable coast.

People enjoying a cloudy day at a beach, walking along the shoreline, some with surfboards, with trees and buildings in the background.

Jungmun Saekdal Beach is a popular beach in Jeju for surfing (or to watch people surf).

It’s located in Seogwipo City in the south and is walkable from the Jungmun Tourist Complex with all the museums, resorts, and restaurants.

There are cliffs lining the beach where you can walk up to for more walking trails and beach viewpoints, as well as restaurants and bars.

7. Iho Tewoo Beach

Address: 1665-13 Iho 1(il)-dong, Jeju-si, Jeju-do

Highlights: Close to airport, swimmable but shallow, near Jeju City tourist sites.

Shallow and sandy Iho Tewoo Beach in Jeju City Jeju Island

Iho Tewoo Beach is located in Jeju City in the north. It’s walkable from the Red & White Horse-shaped lighthouses.

This Jeju beach is swimmable with more wet-coarse sand. There’s also restaurants and stalls at the beach.

If you love to walk like me, there’s a beautiful coastal walking path along the north that leads to Iho Tewoo Beach.

I walked from Yongduam Rock and Dodu Rainbow Coastal Road, which are two popular tourist sites to visit in Jeju City.

Best Beaches in Jeju Island?

View of sunset at Hamdeok Beach with two people sitting in picnic chairs looking out at water

The best beaches in Jeju Island will depend on what you’re looking for: surfing? swimming? water sports, sunsets, less-crowded, near cafes?

My favorite beaches in Jeju Island were Hamdeok Beach and Gwakji Beach for the scenic views and trails surrounding the beaches.

The second smaller beach at Hamdeok Beach was my favorite to relax at and watch the sunset.

Whichever beaches in Jeju Island you visit, have a fun and relaxing time. πŸ’†πŸ»β€β™€οΈ
