Where to Stay in Singapore: 4 Best Areas & Hotels (After 9 Visits)

After visiting Singapore nine times and staying in different neighborhoods, I’ve found that choosing the right area does shape your experience.

Getting around is easy thanks to the MRT metro, but each neighborhood feels very different, and some areas make more sense than others.

This guide breaks down the best areas to stay in Singapore, who they’re best for, what’s nearby, and hotel options at different price points.

By the end, you’ll know exactly where to stay in Singapore based on your travel style, budget, and what you want to spend your time doing.

If it’s your first time and you’re unsure where to stay in Singapore, I’d narrow it down to Marina Bay & City Hall for higher-end stays or Bugis & Kampong Glam for more affordable stays.

The second area with more affordable options will be in Chinatown.

How Many Nights Should You Stay in Singapore?

Quick guide:

• 2 nights – Enough for a “greatest hits” trip: Marina Bay, Merlion, one cultural neighborhood
• 3–4 nights – Ideal for first-timers: you can see multiple districts, a museum, and a park without rushing
• 5+ nights – Great if you like slow days, cafes, and revisiting favorite areas (and doing day/night passes to Gardens by the Bay)

1. Marina Bay & City Hall – Best for First-Timers & Skyline Views

If it’s your first time and you’re not sure where to stay in Singapore, Marina Bay & City Hall is the most “postcard” choice since it’s close to Singapore’s most popular attractions.

It’s one of the best areas to stay in Singapore if you don’t mind paying a bit more for location and views.

Things to Do Nearby

From a Marina Bay / City Hall base, you can walk or take one quick MRT ride to:

• Merlion Park – The classic Merlion statue with Marina Bay Sands in the background.
• Waterfront Promenade at night – Walk the loop around Marina Bay after dark for all the lights and reflections (one of my favorite views!)
• Marina Bay Sands – For the mall, views, and evening light shows over the bay.
• Gardens by the Bay – Visit the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome during the day, or come back at night for the Supertree Grove light show.

Best Hotels in Marina Bay & City Hall

Luxury

• Marina Bay Sands – Singapore’s most famous hotel. Pricey, but you’re paying for the rooftop infinity pool, skyline views, and being right in the center of the Marina Bay.

• The Fullerton Hotel Singapore – A blend of heritage design and luxury close to Merlion Park and the river. It’s a nice area to visit even if you don’t stay here.

Mid-Budget to Budget

• Carlton Hotel Singapore – Solid, central hotel between with comfortable rooms and easy access to the MRT.
• Hotel Mi Bencoolen – Compact, modern rooms near Bras Basah MRT; walking distance from popular attractions without Marina Bay prices.
• lyf Funan Singapore – Stylish co-living style property inside the Funan mall complex, a short walk from City Hall MRT. Great if you like shared spaces and a more social feel.

There are not really any budget hotels and hostels in the Marina Bay, but plenty in nearby Clarke Quay area.

2. Bugis & Kampong Glam – Best for Culture, Cafes & Colorful Streets

If you like a mix of culture, heritage street, and indie shops, Bugis & Kampong Glam is a great choice for to where to stay in Singapore.

I’ve stayed here a few times now, and it was always a fun walkable area with quick access to other areas of Singapore.

If you’re on a tighter budget, you can also look at nearby Little India for more budget hotels and hostels while still spending most of your time wandering Bugis and Kampong Glam.

From a Bugis / Kampong Glam base, you’re close to:

• Bugis Street – Busy market area with shops and stalls.
• Haji Lane – Narrow lanes full of colorful street art, cafes, and small boutiques.
• Arab Street – Shophouses, fabric stores, and views of Sultan Mosque.
• Nearby Little India – Easy to reach for temples, shops, and lively streets.
• Short MRT rides to Chinatown, Marina Bay, and Orchard Road.

Best Hotels in Bugis & Kampong Glam

Luxury

• Andaz Singapore – Stylish hotel with great views and a good location between Bugis and Kampong Glam.
• Pan Pacific Serviced Suites Beach Road – Upscale serviced suites with kitchenettes, near Kampong Glam. Good for longer stays or if you like a bit more space.

Mid-Budget to Budget

• ibis Singapore on Bencoolen – Practical, central base with simple rooms and easy access to multiple MRT lines.
• Hotel Boss – Large budget-to-mid-range hotel near Lavender/Bugis area; good if you want a pool and lots of nearby food options at a more affordable price point.
• The Pod @ Beach Road (Capsule Hostel) – Popular capsule-style hostel near Kampong Glam, great for solo travelers or anyone who doesn’t mind pod-style beds in exchange for location and value. I’ve stayed here before for a quick concert trip, and it’s one of the best hostels I’ve stayed in.

3. Orchard Road – Best for Shopping & a Central MRT Hub

If your ideal trip includes malls, air-con, and easy MRT connections, Orchard Road is another good option when you’re choosing where to stay in Singapore.

This is the city’s main shopping boulevard, lined with malls, department stores, and cafes. It has a “global city” feel over a traditional neighborhood.

Things to Do Nearby

From an Orchard base, you can:

• Walk along Orchard Road – Mall-hop, grab coffee, and enjoy the mostly covered walkways.
• Hop on the MRT to reach Marina Bay, Bugis, or Chinatown.
• Visit Singapore Botanic Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a peaceful green space in the city.

Best Hotels on Orchard Road

Luxury

• Hilton Singapore Orchard (formerly Mandarin Orchard) – Large, central hotel right on Orchard Road with direct mall access and easy MRT connections.
• Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel – At the junction of Orchard and Scotts Road, with a very central location and classic hotel feel.

Mid-Budget to Budget

• YOTEL Singapore Orchard Road – Compact, cleverly designed rooms near Orchard MRT; great if you want something modern and efficient.
• Holiday Inn Express Singapore Orchard Road – Mid-range hotel off Orchard Road; good location and breakfast included.
• York Hotel – Slightly off the main strip but still walkable; larger rooms make it a good choice for families or anyone who likes more space.

Similar to the Marina Bay, there’s not too many budget hotels nor hostels in this area.

4. Chinatown & Clarke Quay – Best for Atmosphere & River Evenings

If you like historic streets, plenty of food and shopping options, and evenings by the river, then Chinatown & Clarke Quay is one of the best areas to stay in Singapore.

Things to Do Nearby

From a Chinatown / Clarke Quay base, you’re close to:

• Chinatown – Explore temples, shophouses, and busy market streets.
• Clarke Quay (nighttime) – Riverside area with shops and restaurants that’s lively after dark; good for walking along the river and people-watching.
• Short rides to Fort Canning Park – Lovely for a walk among greenery and historic spots.
• A few MRT stops from Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay, and Merlion Park.

Best Hotels in Chinatown & Clarke Quay

Luxury

• The Clan Hotel Singapore by Far East Hospitality – Stylish upper-mid-range option near Chinatown. Modern with beautiful pool views.

Mid-Budget to Budget

• Bliss Hotel Singapore – Comfortable boutique hotel right by Chinatown MRT, good for travelers who want to be right in the historic area.
• ST Signature Chinatown – Compact, modern rooms and co-living style spaces in the heart of Chinatown.
• Wink Capsule Hostel (Chinatown) – Popular capsule hostel with clean pods and a central location, ideal for budget travelers who still want comfort and privacy.

So… Where Should You Stay in Singapore?

If you’re still deciding where to stay in Singapore, here’s the simple breakdown:

• First time & want the classic Singapore experience → Marina Bay & City Hall
• You love culture, murals, and heritage streets → Bugis & Kampong Glam
• You’re here to shop and want an easy, central base → Orchard Road
• You want historic streets and river evenings → Chinatown & Clarke Quay

There’s no single best area to stay in Singapore for everyone, but if you’re completely unsure for your first visit, I’d personally start with Marina Bay, or Bugis for more affordable options.

From there, it’s easy to explore the rest of the city—and on your second or third trip (or eighth!), you can try a different neighborhood.
