Where to Stay in Fukuoka for First-Time Visitors

Fukuoka Sign at Kihinkan Hall, Fukuoka, Japan: The historic Kihinkan Hall with its distinctive architecture and green roof, accompanied by a large "Fukuoka" sign in the foreground, set against a cloudy sky.

Downtown Tenjin

Tenjin is known as the commercial hub and downtown area of Fukuoka.

It has shopping malls, restaurants, cafes and local shops.

Tenjin Station is also a busy transport hub. Whether you stay here or not, I do recommend taking a stop by the station—it’s an impressive and massive underground mall.

You can easily access main attractions in Fukuoka from Tenjin by walking, subway, or bus.

Best Area for Day Trips from Fukuoka

Sakurai Futamigaura's Couple Stones, Fukuoka, Japan: A picturesque beach scene featuring a white torii gate and the famous Meoto Iwa (Couple Stones) connected by a sacred rope, set against a blue sea and sky.

Near Hakata Station

Hakata Station is the main transport hub of Fukuoka and a central point for trains or buses.

This area is perfect if you plan to take day trips from Fukuoka.

If you’re taking the Shinkansen or flying in, you’ll likely be stopping by Hakata Station.

This is where I stayed in Fukuoka and I was able to get around easily from here.

Where to Stay in Fukuoka for Nature Sites

Ohori Park, Fukuoka, Japan: A scenic view of Ohori Park with a tranquil lake, lush greenery, and a traditional Japanese pavilion on the water under a clear blue sky.

Central Fukuoka

If you’ want to be within walking distance to more nature sites while still being near city center, Central Fukuoka is the perfect place to stay.

It’s right next to one of the most popular parks in Fukuoka to visit, Ohori Park.

I visited Ohori Park twice during my last visit and was able to catch a beautiful sunset.

Best Area for Beaches

Momochihama Beach, Fukuoka, Japan: A sandy beach with a boardwalk and an ice cream cone decoration, leading to a Mediterranean-style building complex along the shore.

West Fukuoka

If you’re attending an event at the PayPay Dome or enjoy staying along the coast, stay in West Fukuoka, or right next to Momochi beach.

This area is farther from city center, but close to sites like Fukuoka Tower and teamLab Forest Fukuoka.

Momochi beach had a similar (but less busier) vibe to Santa Monica beach in LA.
