Where to Stay in Bangkok: 4 Best Areas & Hotels (Based on 6 Trips)

After visiting Bangkok six times now and staying in different areas, choosing the right area has made a noticeable difference.

Though you’ll likely come across Bangkok traffic regardless, there are specific neighborhoods I’d recommend for first-timers.

This guide breaks down the best areas to stay in Bangkok, who they’re best for, what’s nearby, and some hotel recommendations, including places I’ve personally stayed.

By the end, you should know exactly where to stay in Bangkok based on your travel style, budget, and what you actually want to do.

Best Area to BookBest for:
🛍 Central Bangkok (Siam, Ratchathewi & Pratunam)Best for first-timers, malls, markets, and a central base

🏛 Old Town & RiversideBest for temples and classic sightseeing

If you’re still deciding where to stay in Bangkok, I’d start with Central Bangkok or Sukhumvit and then add on other areas for future trips.

How Many Nights Should You Stay in Bangkok?

Colorful tuk-tuks and cars parked outside the yellow historic building named Golden Place under a partly cloudy sky.

Rough guide:

  • 2 nights – Quick city intro: one full day of temples, one full day of malls/parks
  • 3–4 nights – Ideal for first-timers; enough time to see the main sights, shop, and wander
  • 5+ nights – Great if you want slower days, cafe time, and a mix of neighborhoods

The longest I’ve stayed in Bangkok was for 3+ weeks.

1. Central Bangkok (Siam, Ratchathewi & Pratunam) – Best for Shopping & First-Time Visitors

A busy city street filled with cars, motorcycles, and tuk-tuks, with a pedestrian bridge, tall buildings, and advertising billboards in the background.

If it’s your first visit, the area around Siam, Ratchathewi, and Pratunam is one of the most popular choices.

I’ve stayed here three times now, and it was always a good central area with quick access to malls, markets, and BTS train stations.

It’s busy, urban, and a little chaotic in places but very convenient for a short trip, especially if it’s your first time in the city and you’re still figuring out where to stay in Bangkok.

Siam & Ratchathewi areas have more modern malls + BTS access, while Pratunam leans more toward wholesale fashion + markets, but you’ll likely end up walking between all three.

Things to Do Nearby (Central Bangkok)

A street food market glows at night under festive lights, welcoming visitors with its cheerful red-and-white stalls.

From a hotel in this central area, you’re within easy reach of:

  • Siam Paragon – Huge modern mall with shops, cafes, and a big food court
  • Siam Square – Trendy walkable streets with smaller shops and local fashion
  • CentralWorld Mall – Massive mall usually with an outdoor food market area and decorations in front
  • Big C Supercenter – Perfect for stocking up on souvenirs and everyday items
  • Platinum Fashion Mall – Multi-floor fashion mall packed with affordable clothes and accessories
  • Platinum Night Market – Stalls that pop up around the mall area in the evening

Best Hotels in Central Bangkok

Where I Stayed:

Evergreen Place Siam by UHG – When I stayed here I liked how easy it was to walk or take the train to the main Siam malls. Rooms are spacious for Bangkok; it’s a 4-star hotel but still affordable.

A hotel room featuring a large bed with white linens, a TV mounted on the wall, a desk with a mirror, and a balcony overlooking the city skyline.

City Park Hotel Bangkok Pratunam by PCL – I stayed here as an affordable base for touring and walkable to Pratunam night market.

It’s a good pick if your main plan is hitting the nearby malls and markets and you want a clean, central spot to crash or take mid-day breaks.

Bright, minimalist hotel room featuring a king bed, modern decor, and an adjacent bathroom with a shower and toilet.

Luxury

  • Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok – A resort-style luxury hotel right behind Siam Paragon, with pools, gardens, and direct access to the mall.
  • Centara Grand at CentralWorld – Attached to CentralWorld Mall, with great views from higher floors and easy access to shopping, dining, and events.

Mid-Budget to Budget

  • ibis Bangkok Siam – Good-value, no-fuss chain hotel right by National Stadium BTS. Perfect if you want a clean, reliable base a short walk from Siam.
  • The Berkeley Hotel Pratunam – Big, centrally located hotel close to Pratunam markets and Platinum Mall; good if you want more facilities (like a pool) without full-on luxury pricing.

2. Sukhumvit – Best for Restaurants, Nightlife & Easy BTS Access

A quiet city sidewalk with trees, potted plants, a yellow and white building, and a Chuenja Alley sign visible.

If you want a lively base with lots of modern and international restaurants, cafes, and easy train access, Sukhumvit is a popular choice for where to stay in Bangkok.

The area stretches a long way, but for most travelers it breaks into two main areas:

Both are connected by the BTS Skytrain, so you can easily move between them.

For a month-long stay, I stayed in the lower Sukhumvit area, and I liked how quieter it was while still near markets and BTS stations.

Stay around Asok–Phrom Phong if you want to be in the middle of the action and close to big malls.

Stay further down near On Nut if you want a slightly more local vibe and cheaper prices.

Things to Do Nearby (Sukhumvit)

A multi-story shopping mall with large glass windows, a Christmas tree with ornaments, cars, people, and signs like Decathlon and JD in an urban setting.

Depending on where you stay along Sukhumvit, you’ll be close to:

  • Terminal 21 Mall (Asok) – Airport-themed mall with each floor styled like a different city.
  • EmQuartier Mall (Phrom Phong) – Stylish mall with plenty of cafes and restaurants.
  • Emsphere Mall – Newer mall with design-forward food courts, trendy stores, and spaces for events.
  • Benchasiri Park – Small but pleasant park near Phrom Phong, good for a quick walk.
  • Local markets, side streets, and small malls around On Nut and further down Sukhumvit, where you’ll find a more everyday neighborhood feel.

Best Hotels in Sukhumvit

Where I Stayed (Central Sukhumvit):

Hotel 41 Suite Bangkok – A nice budget pick if you want to stay in the central Sukhumvit area near Phrom Phong. It’s close enough to malls and the BTS to be convenient, but tucked on a quieter street so you’re not right on the main road.

Bright, contemporary hotel room featuring a king-sized bed, wall art with abstract ink design, and amenities including a small sofa and luggage.

Where I Stayed (Further Down Sukhumvit):

Ramada by Wyndham Bangkok Sukhumvit 87 – The area feels more local and relaxed, and you still have easy train access into Asok and beyond. I stayed here for a few weeks and enjoyed the large space and calmer neighborhood.

A living room featuring a brown sofa with decorative pillows, a wooden coffee table with a tray and flower arrangement, a TV on a modern TV stand, and a small dining area with a table and four chairs near windows with curtains.

Luxury

  • Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit – Modern hotel on Sukhumvit Road with spacious rooms, a rooftop bar, and easy walking access to Asok and Nana BTS stations.
  • JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok – Well-known 5-star option near Nana, with comfortable rooms and dining options on-site, plus easy access to the BTS.

Mid-Budget to Budget

3. Old Town & Riverside – Best for Temples & Classic Bangkok

Intricate Thai architecture with golden accents, multiple spires, and ornate decorations at the Grand Palace, Bangkok, under a partly cloudy sky.

If your main focus is temples and historic Bangkok, then Old Town & Riverside is another solid option when you’re deciding where to stay in Bangkok.

You’ll be closer to the main historic sites in Bangkok.

It’s not as convenient for malls, but it’s perfect if you want to spend more time in this part of the city.

Things to Do Nearby (Old Town & Riverside)

Intricate ornate structures at Wat Arun, a famous Buddhist temple in Bangkok, with visitors exploring the area under a cloudy sky.
  • The Grand Palace & Temple of the Emerald Buddha
  • Wat Pho
  • Wat Arun (just across the river)
  • ICONSIAM (riverside mall with shops and an indoor market-style food area)
  • Yaowarat Road / Chinatown – especially at night for street wandering and food

🍾 If you’re a social traveler, Khaosan Road is also in this general area and the most popular nightlife area for tourists and partiers.

Best Hotels in Old Town & Riverside

Luxury

  • Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok – Classic riverside hotel with beautiful rooms and top service. Ideal if you want a “treat yourself” stay by the Chao Phraya.
  • The Peninsula Bangkok – Another iconic riverside hotel with spacious rooms and great views across the river toward the city.

Mid-Budget

  • Riva Surya Bangkok – Boutique riverside hotel near Phra Arthit Pier with easy boat access to key sights.
  • Nouvo City Hotel – Modern, mid-range hotel in the Old Town area with proximity to temples and Khaosan.

4. Silom & Sathorn – Best for Parks & a Central Work/Play Base

The iconic King Power Mahanakhon tower stands tall against a backdrop of blue skies, known for its pixelated architectural design.

If you want to be close to both green spaces and the city, Silom & Sathorn can be a great option for to where to stay in Bangkok., especially if you prefer a slightly more low-key city vibe with business towers and offices.

Hotels in this area can be more expensive than other areas of Bangkok.

Things to Do Nearby (Silom & Sathorn)

A serene lakeside walkway is lined with palm trees and greenery, where people stroll or relax near the water's edge.
  • Lumphini Park – Great for morning or evening walks
  • Benchakitti Park – Not far away; has skywalks and lake views
  • King Power Mahanakhon – For glass skywalk views and city panoramas
  • Easy train rides to Siam, Sukhumvit, and the river

Best Hotels in Silom & Sathorn

Luxury

  • SO/ Bangkok – Design-focused hotel near Lumphini Park with great views, a rooftop pool, and a fun, modern vibe.
  • Banyan Tree Bangkok – Well-known Sathorn hotel with spacious rooms and a famous rooftop bar, plus easy access to nearby offices and transit.

Mid-Budget to Budget

  • Silom Serene Boutique Hotel – Quiet, comfortable spot in Silom, walkable to BTS and local eateries; feels more like a small city retreat than a big chain.
  • The Quarter Silom by UHG – Modern rooms and a central Silom location, nice if you want a fresh feel without a luxury price tag.

So… What’s the Best Area to Stay in Bangkok?

A city skyline at sunset with tall buildings, some smoke, and a vibrant orange sky. The skyline includes high-rise buildings and smaller structures in an urban area.

There’s no single best area to stay in Bangkok that works for everyone, but here’s a simple way to choose:

Brightly lit street scene at night with signs for restaurant, massage, and hotel, along with parked vehicles and a pedestrian walking down the street.

If you’re still not sure where to stay in Bangkok on your first trip, I’d narrow it down to Central Bangkok or Sukhumvit.

On future visits, you can try the Old Town & Riverside for a more temple-focused stay or Silom & Sathorn if you want parks and a slightly quieter city feel.

Over six trips, those have been the areas I keep coming back to and the ones I’d feel confident recommending to friends and family visiting Bangkok for the first time.

Have a great trip to Bangkok!
