9 Vegan Restaurants in Osaka Worth Visiting

Of all the cities I’ve visited in Japan, Osaka is my favorite city for vegan food. There’s plenty of vegan and vegetarian restaurants to go to, and each meal I had was solid.

Plus, the prices were reasonable.

Here’s all of the vegan restaurants in Osaka I went to, plus my reviews, tips, and costs of meals.

1. Green Earth

Green Earth is an all-vegan restaurant in Osaka. It was affordable with plenty of seating.

Their menu includes a variety of vegan desserts, rice bowls, salads, and sandwiches.

I ordered the vegan karaage bowl, or the deep-fried soy rice meat bowl for 950 yen ($6 USD) with an additional 100 yen for extra rice.

It was hearty, filling and perfectly seasoned. I’d go here again!

2. LUU’s BAO Vegan Food Truck

LUU’s BAO is a vegan food truck set up in an outdoor area in between shops.

The sitting area has around six tables, and the staff is really friendly!

I ordered the plant-based meat tatsuta bao with garlic sweet sauce and fries set for 1230 yen ($7.60 USD). I went back again and got the fried mushroom fritters bao. Both solid choices.

I also got the chocolate and strawberry donuts for 250 yen ($1.50 USD) each. I especially loved the strawberry donuts. Don’t skip it!

Tip:

  • You might miss and walk past it like I did! Look for an open gap between shops.

3. SAIJIKI

Price range: lunch sets start around 900 yen ($5-6 USD)

Saijiki is a Taiwanese vegan restaurant in Osaka. There’s lots of seating so you don’t have to worry about queuing.

The lunch sets come in large portions too.

I got the fried vegan chicken set meal with soup, tofu, rice, and vegan chicken for 1500 yen ($9 USD), but there are cheaper sets.

The food was great and filling.

Tip:

  • You have to pay in cash. You order on a machine near the entrance, and insert coins or cash. The order prints out, then you give it to staff at the counter. They call for your order and you pick it up.

4. OKO Takoyaki Vegan

Price range: Six takoyaki for 1000 yen ($6 USD)

There’s two OKO locations: the main one isn’t all vegan, but serves vegan options. This location is all vegan.

They only serve vegan takoyaki with different sauces and some sides options, and each set comes with soup and a cabbage salad.

Their takoyaki is made with okara and was really good! I also got fries and the portions were big. You can top it with vegan cheese for an additional 100 yen.

Tip:

  • You go upstairs. I got there early as there is limited seating and only one person who manages and cooks everything.
  • Go to the other OKO location for vegan yakisoba and gyoza, though that location also gets packed very fast!

5. Shinsekai Paprika Shokudo Vegan&Gluten-free

Price range: 5 assorted kushikatsu 1000 yen ($6 USD), 5-piece takoyaki with cheese 700 yen ($4 USD)

Shinsekai is an all-gluten free and vegan restaurant in Osaka, located near the Tsūtenkaku Tower.

They serve vegan versions of takoyaki, kushikatsu (Japanese deep-fried skewers), and rice and noodle bowls.

I got the takoyaki and kushikatsu assorted set of 5 fried veggies and beyond meat. They were good, though you definitely sauce for the kushikatsu. I also should have ordered more as I got hungry soon after!

Tip:

  • The restaurant is a bit hidden in an alleyway, but you’ll see big vegan signage and outdoor seating.
  • You scan the QR code on the tables to order, then pay afterwards.

6. Paprika Shokudo Vegan

Paprika Shokudo is an all-vegan restaurant in Osaka. The location is beautiful and cozy with rustic wooden tables and indoor and outdoor seating.

The lunch menu is limited. I got the soy meat karaage bowl (1145 yen) and latte. To be honest, I expected it to taste “healthy” but the food was so flavorful and filling!

The staff and chefs are also really friendly.

Tip:

  • You scan the QR code on the tables to order, then pay afterwards.
  • Double check for last calls.

7. MERCY Vegan Factory

Price range: 1400 yen ($8.70 USD) for sets

MERCY Vegan Factory is a popular vegan restaurant in Osaka, especially for breakfast. (Most restaurants in Japan don’t open so early!)

Their most popular item is the vegan egg sandwich but it was already sold out when I went there for lunch.

They also have breakfast sets with drinks from 8-10AM.

I got the fried kurumafu (wheat) set for 1400 yen ($8.70 USD) and strawberry cream sandwich for 600 yen ($3.70 USD).

The food was good, and I would go again to try the other items.

Tip:

  • Service is just okay, and you have to be a bit proactive in ordering and getting their attention.
  • Seating are two tables inside so you’ll probably be sitting next to others during peak hours, but there’s a few tables outside too.

8. Aju

Price range: Most popular item okonomiyaki for 1280 yen ($8 USD)

Aju is an all-vegan restaurant located in northern Osaka. It is more out of the way, but the food was really authentic and flavorful.

I got the okonomiyaki with vegan meat inside (1280 yen) and fried shiitake mushroom “oysters” (660 yen).

It’s a small restaurant with a one-person staff so he can’t take large amounts of people. I went at noon and was the only person there.

Tip:

  • You ring the bell on your table when you’re ready to order. There are instructional signs in English.
  • The owner is not unkind, but not welcoming either if that makes sense!
  • Small-ish portions, but really well done and filling.

9. Vegan Ramen by Playpen Friends

Vegan Ramen by Playpen Friends serves all-vegan ramen in Osaka and is also a bar. It’s located upstairs and has limited tables plus bar seating.

You can choose between six different ramen and put in your order with staff.

I got the Vegan Syoyu Tonkotsu Ramen with Hokaido wheat noodles. The ramen was flavorful and filling. Not the #1 ramen I’ve tried in Japan, but still really solid.
