2023 Travelpayouts Affiliate Program Review and Tutorial

I first discovered Travelpayouts when I was looking up articles on how to make money with travel blogging.

I had started a travel blog almost a year ago, got excited about finally publishing it live, only to let it sit idle with the same blog posts and no revenue. Can you relate? 🥴

For almost all of the travel bloggers I came across, affiliate programs were the second most profitable source of income from their blog, second to ad affiliate revenue.

While there were a lot of travel-related affiliate programs showing up in Google search, Travelpayouts was the only travel affiliate network that I came across.

I also kept reading that the Travelpayouts commission rates were higher than average.

So I stopped my procrasti-planning and procrasti-research and just signed up.

Is Travelpayouts Legit?

With so many clickbaity programs out there, is the Travelpayouts affiliate program legit? Yes! They have a score of 4 on Trustpilots. You can read other blogger success stories and reviews on the Travelpayouts blog.

Adventour Begins writes: “I generate income with Travelpayouts, especially through Viator and GetYourGuide. My experience with Travelpayouts has been amazing so far. The platform is simple and user-friendly, especially compared to so many other affiliate platforms. As a result, it’s easy to navigate for blogging beginners.”

What is the Travelpayouts Affiliate Program?

The Travelpayouts affiliate program is more of a network and platform of affiliates, and not just one affiliate program. Travelpayouts has more than 100 travel-related brands in its network.

Here are the different categories of brand partners on Travelpayouts:

  • Flights
  • Accomodation/Hotels
  • Transportation
  • Entertainment
  • Tours
  • Car Insurance

How does Travelpayouts work?

If you’re not familiar with what an affiliate program is, I wrote an overview on making money with affiliates.

Basically, you’re given trackable links to other brands’ products that you can promote on blog posts (or Youtube videos and social media).

If a reader clicks on that link and makes a purchase, you receive a percentage, or commission, of that sale.

What is the Travelpayouts Commission Rate?

The commission rate varies by brand, but the average rate seems to be around 5%.

Here are some rates taken from the Travelpayouts dashboard:

Booking.com: 4% Viator: 8% Rental Cars: 6%

Trip.com: 1-5% Agoda 6%

Kiwi.com 3% Big Bus Tours: 9%

So if someone clicks on your Agoda link and makes a $100 USD purchase, you’d receive $6 USD. Note that the reader has to make a purchase within a certain time, or “cookie lifetime.”

For example, Booking.com’s cookie lifetime is just one session. Viator, on the other hand, is 30 days.

Is There a Minimum Travelpayouts Payout?

Payouts are made once a month, between the 11th and 20th of each month. To withdraw the money, you need to reach a minimum of $50 USD.

You can request to have the payout transferred to either your bank or Paypal account.

How Much Money Can You Make with Travelpayouts?

$6 USD in the example above seems like a small amount of money, but if you’re just getting started and your website isn’t monetized by website ads or sponsorships, affiliate programs are an easy way to get started.

In their 2022 recap, Travelpayouts writes: “$44 million we’ve paid out since the creation of Travelpayouts. $14 million we’ve paid out to our partners this year. That’s 45% more than last year, and a record for us!”

As you get more traffic to your site and your affiliate links are strategically placed, you can begin to see all the small earnings add up.

If 10 people purchase through your Travelpayouts affiliate link with a 6% commission rate, you’ll receive $60. That’s a good start to passive income.

What if 100 readers click on it and make a purchase? That’s $600. And if 100 readers click and purchase from another link with a 5% commission rate? That’s another $500! It will all add up with little effort invested up front.

Should You Sign Up for Travelpayouts?

While you still have to sign up individually for the different brands once you’ve registered with Travelpayouts, it’s all done inside one website.

You don’t have to go to each brand’s website and create an account with them. Plus, you’ll only need the Travelpayouts website to track the affiliate links and their stats.

You also get paid under one paycheck and only have to meet the Travelpayouts $50 USD minimum instead of multiple minimums.

Moreover, Travelpayouts provides a lot of affiliate tools to help you make sales. Some of them include:

My Travelpayouts Plan for 2023

As a new blogger, I’m starting with only a few brands from Travelpayouts. I don’t want to over-promote a bunch of brands at once, especially since I don’t have a large amount of blog posts yet.

Here are the brands I’ve chosen to start with, which are the brands I use and have the most experience with:

After getting accepted into the affiliate programs, I go through this process:

  1. I look through my blog posts that either mention any of the brands or talk about anything related to the brand’s services. For example, in my South Korea travel guide, I talk about the hotel price ranges. I could easily link an Agoda affiliate link copied from Travelpayouts and insert it into the sentence, or even embed a hotel search widget.
  2. I go to my list of blog post ideas, and prioritize which ones I could easily insert affiliate links into. If I can’t fit in any affiliate link nor expect high traffic from the post, I move that post to the end of my blogs-to-write list.

Travelpayouts Referral Program

Along with the affiliates from different brands, you can make additional income by promoting the Travelpayouts affiliate program to other bloggers that want to make money with Travelpayouts too.

If you sign up using a referral like (like mines), you’ll receive $25 towards your $50 payout, which means you’re halfway there.

Once you get your Travelpayouts referral link after signing up, you’ll get 7% of whatever sales of those that sign up using your referral link for a limited time.

Don’t Regret Starting with Affiliates Sooner

Getting started with affiliates may seem tedious or daunting, even overwhelming as a new blogger with so many blog-to-do lists.

As someone who let their blog sit inactively for almost a year, I realized that different tasks and efforts gets you different outputs, and that time spent on something does not always mean quality results.

A lot of my travel blog efforts in the beginning were just busy work that didn’t contribute to my main goals for this blog. If you want to start making income from your blog, you have to prioritize the tasks that will get you there.

As shown by many travel blog income reports, affiliate programs are profitable and worth the effort put in. Move travel affiliate programs to the top of your to-do list.

Get started today so you won’t regret not starting sooner. You got this!
