Top 7 Kyoto Cherry Blossom Spots – Don’t Skip These! (2025)

Kyoto was my favorite city to see cherry blossom spots during my trip to Japan last year.

I was lucky to catch the peak of cherry blossom season in Kyoto, and a few days right before it rained.

The backdrop of an ancient city with sakura flowers was definitely a special experience.

Here’s all of the main cherry blossom spots in Kyoto I visited, including parks and hanami sites to visit at night.

These were 7 spots I researched that had the most sakura.

Since I was short on time, I also included a list of spots I wasn’t able to get to and would save for next time.

Tips for Visiting Kyoto During Cherry Blossom Season

Shrine Torii Gates Cherry Blossom, Kyoto, Japan: A picturesque scene of a shrine's torii gate framed by vibrant green foliage and cherry blossoms in full bloom, with traditional lanterns softly lighting the path.
  • Check the weather. One rainy day can wipe out cherry blossom trees (though the scattered pink sakura on the ground is quite pretty).
  • So try to save the most popular cherry blossom sites for the beginning of your trip.
  • Many cherry blossom spots in Kyoto are within walking distance downtown. The rest are accessible by bus.
  • Some parks and shrines will have special night events to see cherry blossom trees illuminated. Check this website for updated events.
  • Many shrines are free or have a small fee, and some may have an additional fee to enter gardens with cherry blossoms.
  • While popular places like Fushimi Inari Taisha and Kinkaku-ji should be on your list of places to visit, you won’t see much cherry blossoms there. Save these for the end of your trip if you can.

1. Keage Incline

Keage Incline Cherry Blossom, Kyoto, Japan: Visitors walk along the historic Keage Incline, surrounded by cherry blossom trees in full bloom, with old railway tracks visible beneath them.

The Keage Incline was my favorite cherry blossom spot in Kyoto.

It used to be a former railway and is now a pedestrian path lined with cherry blossom trees.

It does get packed so visit early if you want good solo shots. 📸

I visited right when it started to sprinkle and seeing the cherry blossoms slowly fall from the trees was beautiful.

2. Okazaki Canal

Okazaki Canal Cherry Blossom, Kyoto, Japan: A scenic view of the Okazaki Canal lined with cherry blossom trees in full bloom, their reflection visible on the still water under a partly cloudy sky.

Right above the Keage Incline is the Okazaki Canal, which is lined with sakura trees.

Okazaki Canal is located right before the Heian Shrine so you can combine both sites.

I also visited again to see the sunset views above the canal.

3. Gion Weeping Cherry Tree

Gion Weeping Cherry Tree, Maruyama Park, Kyoto, Japan: A large weeping cherry tree in full bloom, beautifully illuminated at night in Maruyama Park. The tree's cascading blossoms create a soft, ethereal glow against the dark sky, with a crowd of people gathered below, taking photos and enjoying the sight.

The Gion Weeping Cherry Tree is located inside Maruyama Park.

It’s especially worth visiting at night when it’s illuminated.

The area does get packed in the evening, but the park itself is huge to explore.

4. Kyoto Botanical Gardens

The Kyoto Botanical Gardens in Japan are adorned with breathtaking cherry blossoms in full bloom, their delicate white petals creating a dreamy spring atmosphere. Visitors stroll beneath the trees, enjoying the seasonal beauty as petals gently fall to the ground. The soft contrast of the overcast sky and fresh green leaves adds to the serene charm of the scene.

This is Japan’s oldest public botanical garden and contains over 12,000 plant species across themed sections.

You’ll see large areas covered with cherry blossom trees. The whole garden is worth visiting.

Tickets: 200 yen ($1.30 USD).

5. Kamo River

The Kamo River (Kamogawa) in Kyoto, Japan is lined with stunning cherry blossoms, their delicate pink petals cascading over a peaceful walking path. Visitors stroll beneath the blossoms, enjoying the serene riverside scenery and the soft, overcast sky. The distant mountains add to the tranquil atmosphere, making it a perfect springtime escape.

Right before the entrance to the Botanical Gardens is the long Kamo River that flows through Kyoto.

It’s lined with cherry blossom trees and you’ll see locals talking walks. I found this area super peaceful.

6. Gion District

The Gion District in Kyoto, Japan, comes alive with cherry blossoms in full bloom, creating a picturesque spring scene. Visitors, including two women in vibrant kimonos, stroll beneath the pink canopy, adding to the area's traditional charm. The mix of historic wooden buildings and modern city life enhances the timeless beauty of Kyoto during sakura season.

Gion is Kyoto’s most famous geisha district with preserved wooden machiya houses, teahouses, and traditional restaurants.

There are cherry blossom trees throughout Gion.

7. Shirakawa Canal

Shirakawa Canal in the Gion District, Cherry Blossom, Kyoto, Japan: A picturesque view of the Shirakawa Canal in the Gion District during cherry blossom season. Traditional wooden houses line the canal, with branches of blooming cherry blossoms arching over the water. The lush greenery and vibrant pink flowers create a serene and idyllic scene.

The Shirakawa Canal runs through a quieter part of Gion and is lined with willow trees, sakura, stone paths, and historic buildings.

It was one of the most scenic places I visited in Kyoto, especially during cherry blossom season.
